As a culvert meaning; it means to enter or pass, hole, space, passage. Ventilation of closed areas such as bathrooms and wc is also called culverts. However, the definition of the culvert as a structure is as follows;

 

In the case of natural stream beds (dry creeks) passing through precipitation, the drainage structures constructed to pass rainwater passing to the superficial flow due to precipitation without damaging the road are called culverts.

 

Culverts have a key importance in road drainage systems. Culverts are constructed to safely pass the surface and subsurface waters collected with road body drainage elements and the land waters collected with natural streams flowing towards the road under the road, connection road and junction branches.

 

The culverts should be designed to be compatible with other drainage elements. If the culverts are not designed in a proper size, the drainage system will not work properly. In case the culverts to be designed are made with smaller sections than they should be, the waters that swell in the dry stream beds after excessive rainfall exceed the road body, closing the road, the erosion of the road embankment or the bearing power and / or stability of the ground under the embankment.

 

Making the grilles larger than necessary during the planning phase will not be economical and will cause the cost of the whole project to increase.
